Principal's Welcome 2012 PDF Print E-mail
Welcome back to the 2012 school year! I look forward to the 2012 school year being a positive, purposeful and rewarding year for all of our students, staff and community members.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the many new students and families that have joined our school community. We had many enrolments in the week before school commenced which meant that a new class was created late on Friday afternoon. Class arrangements and our teacher allocations are not confirmed until the end of the second week of the Term therefore the classes that students are in at this time are provisional classes until our final allocation is definite. We are unable to make any class changes until our numbers are confirmed. I hope that everyone had a very happy holiday and enjoyed the wonderful weather that we had during the holiday break.

I would like to congratulate and welcome the 112 new Prep students who walked through our school gates as new school students for the very first time. The first day of the school year is always a very special time for our Prep students and their families and I am pleased to report that all of our Prep students have made a very positive start to their schooling. Well done everyone!

The implementation of the National Curriculum this year will see all of our students learning the same content in English, Mathematics and Science. This year we will be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of our school and will be holding our Opening Ceremony for our School Hall and Library. It will be exceptional for us to have both of these great facilities to commence the 2012 school year. This year we have the welcome addition of a C&K Kindy on our school campus and we look forward to forging a strong partnership with the Kindy.

There is a number of new staff that I would like to welcome to Kuluin for 2012. Water Main - Traffic Impact PDF Print E-mail
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR KULUIN STAFF AND PARENTS

Installation of Trunk Water Main – Traffic Impact in Elkhorn Street, Kuluin

Unitywater would like to update you on the upgrade to the water supply network in the Kuluin area. A new trunk water main from Indiana Place to Main Road via Tallow Wood Drive and Elkhorn Street to provide additional water flow for current needs and future growth will be commencing next week. The works involve installing new water pipes and work will be undertaken from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday, weather permitting.

The route of the pipeline passes in front of The Kuluin School and to carry out this
necessary upgrade there will be temporary partial road closures in Elkhorn Street,
between Levy Court and Rosslare Court, from Monday 30 January to Friday 3 February that may cause some delays. Parking will also be affected along Elkhorn Street up to Fremantle Place.

This area is a student drop off zone which will have traffic and pedestrian management including controllers and signage in place to assist with safe access for traffic and pedestrians while this work is completed. The safety of Kuluin students, staff and parents is of paramount importance.

We thank you in advance for your understanding the importance of this planned work and for your patience as while this upgrade occurs.

For more information visit the projects pages on our website, http://www.unitywater.com/projects

If you have any questions regarding this work, please contact our Customer Service team on 1300 0 UNITY (1300 086 489) or the Project Manager Neil Parish on 5409 3851.

Tuckshop and Uniform News PDF Print E-mail
Hi and Welcome (whether it is Welcome back and Welcome to Kuluin School).

We are in the final stages of preparation for our 2012 Tuckshop Menu and Price list, so we ask that the school body please be patient, this will reach you all via an insert in the Newsletter and will also be available on this website very soon.

We also ask those that have allergies or specific dietary requirements for their children, please clearly mark this on your children’s Tuckshop bags EVERYTIME you order.

For those that are new to the school, the following is a quick run down of how our Tuckshop works:

We work on a bag system and by that I mean, orders are placed in the morning BY 9AM at the Tuckshop and we work off the numbers that are ordered from those bags, if your order is not placed by the 9AM deadline then we can not accommodate your needs as we do not sell Lunch items over the counter.

You can place your order with us either through the slot at the end of the last shutter or when lining up at the Tuckshop counter with your paper bag clearly marked with the following: NAME and CLASS, whether it is for Little or Big Lunch and the order below that, if change is needed to be given one of the corners of the bags will be folded over and the change will be stuck down in that corner.

We do sell “snack items” at the second bell at Big Lunch to Year 1 and above, these items include ice blocks, ice cream, Jumpy’s, drinks, cookies and our very popular Blizzard.

Also, I would like to advise the school body that in the mornings when we open, we offer drinks for sale, no food or snacks are available for purchase at that time leading up to the 2 morning bells.

Uniform News

For those of you that are awaiting arrival of our emergency top up of school uniforms, please be informed that this is arriving either by the end of the month or the 1st week of February. Please feel free to pop past and ask if they have arrived yet.  We will be placing signage and also an article in the Newsletter and on this site once they are here.

Our Uniform Shop is open Monday - Friday from 8:30am-1:00pm

Thanks,

Kellie Bell

Principal's Report 6/12 PDF Print E-mail
End of Year

The 2011 school year has certainly moved very quickly and I would like to extend my congratulations to all of our students who have focussed well on their learning throughout this year. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the very professional staff of Kuluin who work tirelessly to teach and support our children each and every day to ensure that they are receiving a well-balanced, quality education. I would also like to thank our community for your ongoing support and the contribution that everyone has made to our school throughout the year.

We can all be very proud of Kuluin’s achievements during the year - we have state of the art facilities with our new hall and our newly refurbished resource centre which have now provided us with some flexible options for our students, learning and teaching. We have travelled even further down our SWPBS journey, consolidated our school English, Mathematics and Science programs, have improved NAPLAN data and there have been many sporting, music, dance fever and Opti-MINDS successes and achievements throughout the year.

Staff Changes

There are a number of staff who will be leaving us on Friday for a variety of different reasons. On behalf of all of us at Kuluin, I would like to thank each staff member for the wonderful contribution that they have made to our school and to wish them all the very best for the future. Farewell to Mrs Bloom, Ms Glaum, Ms Carter, Mrs Hollis, Mr Cairns, Mr Shane Allen, Mrs Magill, Ms Scott, Mrs Taylor, Mrs Brown and Mrs Allen.

Congratulations to Mr Winrow who has been appointed as Acting Principal at Connondale State School. I would also like to acknowledge and thank Mrs McFadzen for her role as ‘Acting HOSES’ for the past 18 months. I would like to thank Mr Winrow and Mrs McFadzen for the wonderful jobs that they have done as part of our Administration team.
Farewell to Mr Deighton who is returning to Bli Bli State School next year.

Deck the Hall Carols Night

I would like to thank Pauline Belsar, Wayne Lindemayer, Andrew Grummitt, Jenni Miller and all of the staff and parents who worked together to make the Carols Night a very successful and enjoyable family night. Well done to all of our students who demonstrated their excellent singing and performance skills. I would also like to thank our P&C Association for your organisation and contribution to our Carols night. It is such a wonderful opportunity for our students to perform in our new school hall with parents and family supporting them. Well done Kuluin!

Congratulations

Congratulations and best wishes to Garda Busfield who officially retired in late October after many years of service with Education Queensland.

Thank You

This Wednesday evening we celebrate the successful completion of Primary School for our Year 7 students at our Year 7 Graduation Ceremony. I would like to extend my congratulations to each one of our Year 7 students and to wish them all the very best for High School and beyond.

I would like to farewell and thank all of the students and parents of Kuluin who are leaving our school this year for the contribution that you have made to our school and to wish you all the very best for the future.

Christmas Craft Stall

Thank you to all of the parents and community members who have worked hard all year to create the many different Christmas crafts that were made available for our students to purchase at the Christmas Craft Stall last week. Thank you to the community members who volunteered their time to operate the stall. Well done!

New Student Seating at Kuluin PDF Print E-mail
In 2009 the Student Council identified a number of areas around our school where the timber seating needed refurbishment or in some cases replacement.  We thought that this was something we could fix so in 2010 the students in the council held a working bee on a long weekend where we sanded back and repainted a lot of this seating.

Unfortunately there were many areas where the seats were just too bad and needed to be replaced so we left them, hoping that in the future we could afford to replace them.  Well good things come to those who wait and this year’s Student Council were lucky enough to be able to help fund the replacement of the other seats. This was a combined effort between the Student Council and the School’s Officers Network who were able to help Wayne Lindenmayer (our Schools Officer/Groundsman) replace them all.

I’d like to thank Kylie Randall our Business Manager and Wayne Lindenmayer for giving the Student Council the opportunity to complete our project (all without getting our hands dirty!).  We think the new seating looks great and hope that it lasts for many years to come.

School improvement activities are just one of the ways the Student Council assists our school. Funding for these activities comes largely from free dress days and other events we run, so thank you to the Kuluin community for your generous support of our events.

Craft News 6/12 PDF Print E-mail
Firstly, our gratitude must go to Gaewyn Putt who has tirelessly run the Craft Group over the years. Even though her daughter finished Year 12 last year, she still willingly volunteered at Kuluin School and gave so much time and effort to ensure that there were stalls each year. Unfortunately, due to recent circumstances, Gaewyn will not be returning next year and we will miss her very much.

Also we must thank the ladies, Michele Thompson and Pam Bassett who helped so tirelessly on Thursday and Friday morning at the Christmas Craft Stall. A big Thank You to Michael Guest and Marc DeBruin who came early on both mornings to help set up the tables and help with the boxes. Thank you to Wayne who used his tractor to move the boxes to and from the Volunteer Room on both days. We had the assistance of three students, Lachlan G, Dakota B and Hayden G who were very helpful. Without the help of these people, we would not have been able to run the stall on both mornings. Sunday night, we had the assistance of Simone Elling, Michael Guest, Nan Sargood and Terri Lever who were a great help and for which we are very grateful. We would also like to thank everyone who donated items of food which were sold at the stall, it was a fantastic effort by everyone.

Now the sad/bad news:  Due to the lack of support Craft Group will no longer be operating UNLESS there is a person who is willing to take on the responsibility of running the Craft Group. We have had willing support over the years from people who have made things at home – these include Gaewyn, Sharon, Kerry, Monique, Fran, Pauline, Pam, Winnie, Bronwyn and a lot of other people who have taken things home to complete for us. Unfortunately due to sick children and work commitments, the number attending the Monday mornings dropped to only Gaewyn and Kerry – both ladies not having children at the school. Numbers are needed on that craft day to start new crafts, sort out what needs to done at home and to wrap completed items ready for a stall. If you are interested in running the Craft Group and know people who would come along to help you, please contact Pauline Belsar. The craft stalls are something that your children look forward to each year.

We hope that over the years you have received some of the wonderful gifts that we have made. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a New Year full of happiness.

Kerry and Sharon

Important Request from the Library PDF Print E-mail
There are hundreds of overdue books still to be returned to the Library. Could I please ask you to assist your child/ren in looking for these.  If you go through your book shelves and anything with a Kuluin barcode or spine label on it, please return it to the Library immediately.  Some of these books could have been borrowed out in teacher’s names and the children have taken them home, so we would really appreciate it, if you find any books you are not sure of, then return them please to the Library and we can check them out.

Many thanks for your assistance.
