I would like to advise everyone that Kuluin teachers Liz Stunden and Denise McCormack have won a team award for innovation in the 2012 NEiTA awards. This is a huge achievement for Liz and Denise and I know that everyone will join with me in congratulating them on their accomplishment.

School Disco/ Early Years Movie Night
Congratulations and well done to all of the students who attended both of these events. Your behaviour and participation in these school based activities were of a very high standard. Thank you to the many staff members, P&C members, Early Years Support Group and parent volunteers who helped to organise, set up, clean up and supervise at these school events. Well done Kuluin!
Athletics Carnivals
I would like to inform everyone that we will be having two athletics carnivals this year in line with the way in which our school is organised. The P-3 athletics carnival will be conducted on Friday 08-06-12 and the Year 4 - 7 athletics carnival will be held on the 13-07-12 which is the first week back after the school holidays. It would have been desirable to have held both of these carnivals prior to the school holidays however due to the weather, public holidays and many other school events this is not possible.
Semester One Report Cards
Semester One Report cards will be distributed in the last week of the school Term for all students in Year 1 to Year 7. This report will provide you with valuable information regarding your child’s academic achievement and an effort grade in all areas of the curriculum and a grade for your child’s behaviour.
It is extremely important that all of our parents are aware that if a student receives a C or a Sound for academic achievement this means that your child is meeting the grade level expectation for their year level. It is important that children are encouraged and congratulated for achieving a C or a Sound for academic achievement because this accomplishment should be celebrated.

Sports houses - everyone remembers sports days at school for good or not so good reasons. Kuluin started off with only two sports houses. Which ones are the originals? Their colours are very patriotic for Australians - the answer soon.
Which team/house has won the majority of athletic days? That will be hard to determine as back in the early days of the school the athletic carnivals were whole school affairs and now due to size, we have different carnivals.
The restrictions set by the oval have caused many different configurations of the carnivals. The length of the sprint track has varied from 90 metres to 100 metres. The long jump pits were moved every year during the growth period of the school, as the buildings were erected where once was spare land. The two original teams were of course Kabala (Green) and Tilgonda (Gold).

We would like to say a BIG thank you to the following volunteers:
Ann Nuttall Carole Ryan
David Salter Debbie Christopher
Jean Harris Jill Massey
Kate Wotton Ken Styles
Lionel Grambauer Norma Pothoven

Year 7 Leadership Camp
A reminder that the balance of $190 for the Year 7 Leadership Camp in Week 7 of this term is due no later than Wednesday 23rd May. Please be reminded that the cost
is non-refundable and no payment extensions or payment plans will be offered after the 23rd of May. This date needs to be met by the school in order to pay the camp provider.
School Payments vs P&C Payments
Please note that all fundraising activities (ie. raffles, discos, trivia nights, entertainment books, stalls, pie drives, walkathon, movie nights, etc) are managed by our P&C and not by the school administration. While the school administration is happy to collect monies relating to fundraising on behalf of the P&C, we ask that you provide the correct payment in a sealed envelope separate from school related payments (ie. excursions, etc), so we can pass this cash straight on to the P&C. Change cannot be provided by the office. Also, please note the office is unable to receipt EFTPOS payments for fundraising events as the P&C and school have separate bank accounts. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Support a Talker is an early intervention program designed to build speaking and listening skills in early primary school.
Language experiences are provided through small group interactions with trained teacher aides/teachers. Some of the areas we work on include – Giving and Receiving Instructions, Vocabulary and Grammar and Answering Questions.
Games and Books feature heavily in the program making each session lots of fun!
Our new Support a Talker groups will be starting shortly in Prep.
Each week we will focus on particular strategies which can assist with developing children’s speaking and listening skills.
This week’s strategies are:
Focus on Important Information
The technique helps children identify the part of the request they should be attending to:
- How are these fish different?
- What colour is this fish?
- And what colour is this one?
Relate Unknown to the Known
The technique helps students to make meaning by activating prior knowledge:
- The spaghetti is hard. How will it feel when it is cooked? (Don’t know)
- Remember when we cooked the potatoes? How did they feel?
