Principal's Report 4/11/09

Walkathon:
Congratulations to the students and teachers who participated in the Walkathon on Friday afternoon. It was wonderful to see some of our parents come along and support our students. I would like to thank Mrs Belsar, Mr Doherty and Mr Grummitt for their organisation and coordination of the Walkathon. All monies for the Walkathon are due by Friday 6 November. Thank you to all of the parents and community members who donated money to our students for their participation in the Walkathon.

Prep Open Day:
Last Thursday our Prep teachers, teacher aides, specialist teachers and Mrs Harvey conducted a most successful Open Day for our incoming Prep students for 2010. To organise an Open Day of this calibre takes a great deal of careful preparation and organisation by the team of staff members involved and I would like to thank all of them for their efforts in making this a positive first experience for these little people and their families. Community members who are aware of children who maybe attending Prep at The Kuluin School next year should advise parents to advise the school office of this student as soon as possible.

Birth Certificates for Children Starting Prep Year
Parents of children born between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2005 who are starting Prep in 2010 will need a birth certificate to enrol them in the Prep Year. The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is encouraging parents to apply for birth certificates now to avoid the new school year rush. To apply for a standard or commemorative birth certificate you can:

Download an application form from www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm
Visit the registry at 110 George Street, Brisbane or your nearest courthouse.

Don’t leave it to the last minute – apply for a birth certificate now.
Further information for parents and carers wanting to enrol their Prep-aged children in a state school in Queensland is available on the Department of Education and Training website at: www.education.qld.gov.au/studentservices/inclusive/prep

Early Years Fashion Parade:
Tickets for the Early Years Fashion Parade are still able to be purchased. The Fashion Parade will be held on Saturday night 7 November ( see enclosed flyer) Please consider supporting our school, gathering some friends and coming along to enjoy a fun night out.

School Expectations:
In recent months we have been experiencing some problems with High School students who are coming onto our campus to collect their younger siblings. One of our three school rules is Being Respectful and this is an expectation for our whole school community. When older students are waiting for their brothers/sisters of an afternoon we expect that they will be sitting quietly waiting outside their brothers/sisters classroom and not playing loud games, riding bikes/scooters, wandering through the school grounds or causing any other disruption to the learning and teaching in our school. I would encourage parents who have given this responsibility to their older children to reinforce our expectations with your child.

News from the BSM
2010 Book Lists
Please look out for 2010 book lists which will be sent home next week.  These lists provide an opportunity to gather all your child/ren's stationery and textbook needs for 2010 in one easy transaction.  The prices are extremely economical and home delivery is provided at a very cheap $4.50 per household!  Also, the school will benefit by receiving 15% commission on all sales!  Prices for each year level will not exceed the following: Year 1 - $84.28, Year 2 - $96.41, Year 3 - $91.79, Year 4 - $92.42, Year 5 - $61.42, Year 6 - $101.90, Year 7 - $106.93 and Multiage 5/6 & 6/7 - $94.84.  Please note that these amounts include items that may not need to be purchased as your child/ren may already have the items.  Prep will not have a book list, but will continue to have a classroom resource scheme (CRS) levy of $100 for the year.  The 1-7 CRS levy will continue to be $40 for the year.

Completed orders including payment will be due back at the school by 20 November for delivery commencing 7 December 2009.  Orders may still be lodged after 20 November with a delivery time of around 2 weeks.  Please note that home delivery is the only option for receiving your child/ren's book packs this year.  Delivery to the school will not be possible as we do not have the storage space due to our classroom refurbishments and our classes having to use Walbai Gundoo (our book pack storage area used in the past) until the end of the year.  Further information will be provided on the book list order forms.

Monthly Statement Time
Just another reminder for all families who still haven't paid their Classroom Resource Scheme (CRS) levy for 2009, that the levy is $100 for Prep and $40 for years 1-7.  This voluntary resource scheme, which has the full support of our P&C Association, is vital for the purchase of classroom resources and consumables that enhance the learning opportunities for each class.  If we don't receive these levies from families, the funds must come from school grant funding that could be used to purchase additional resources for the benefit of all our students.  Thank you to the families who have already paid their contribution.  We would appreciate the families who have not yet paid to please do so at your earliest convenience.

Please note that we are still carrying an unusually large amount of debt at the moment and ask families who have still haven't paid for levies and/or activities, especially CRS, RE Books, Instrumental Music levies and HRE lessons, to please do so in the next few weeks.  The end of the year is not far off and we need to have all debt paid off prior to the end of the school year.

Statements showing amounts owing have been sent home this week to all families - please check your child's bag for yours.  Payment can be made through the office money collection slot, over the telephone by credit card or in person at the money collection window between 8.30am and 9.30am.  EFTPOS is available at this time.  If you have any queries, or wish to establish a payment plan for your outstanding debt, please do not hesitate to contact me on
5477 3710.

New Gates
Please be aware that we will be installing some gates at both our entrances from Daintree Close and Elkhorn Street in the next few weeks.  These gates are being installed in an effort to improve school security outside normal school hours, therefore will be locked during school holidays, weekends and before and after school.

Year 1 Excursions
Yesterday 1PL and 1JP went on an excursion to the bush.  First we did yoyo.  It was fun.  Everyone had a go.  Tomo said it was scary.  It was not scary for me.  I had to wear a harness.  Then we ate lunch.  We had to eat our sandwich first.  I accidentally ate something else.

Next we played some fun challenging games.  My favourite was Henny Penny, Foxy Loxy.  Henny Penny, Foxy Loxy was a fast running game.  It was hard, but fun.  It didn’t look like a challenge but I believe that it was a challenge.  Then we had to play a game and listen to the lady speaking.  We had to do what she said.  It was kind of like Simon Says.

After that we went on a hike to the Low Ropes.  We saw a boy doing the High Ropes.  We were split up into groups of three.  We started on the climbing wall.  Kelsie was scared that she would fall.  Finally we went on the bus.  I thought it was raining but my bag was dripping water.  It was embarrassing.  My favourite part was the flying fox because I liked sliding down the triangle.

My Excursion
Yesterday we went on an excursion with 1JP and 1PL.  First we went to yoyo.  I was so scared that I cried.  I’m not normally scared.

Next we played games.  We played Chicken Little and other games but I don’t know the names.  Third we did Low Ropes.  I started first on all of them except the last one.  The best was the flying fox.  It was the funniest as well.  My team was Maya and Jean-Luc.  It was fun.  I had a good team.  We worked good together.  No-one in our team were fighting.  I wish I was always in that team.

When it was time to go, I didn’t want to go.  I wanted to stay forever.

We are seeking information from families to ascertain if students are returning next year and to give some basic information about our class allocation procedures. Please ensure that any information you would like us to take into consideration when placing students into classes is submitted by November 6th 2009.

Daniel Morcombe Foundation
Daniel Morcombe was an average boy like any other. Unfortunately on 7 December 2003, he was abducted while waiting for a bus to the plaza. To this day police, family, friends and the community have been looking for Daniel but sadly they have not found him. This Friday is Day for Daniel, a day where we remember Daniel and promote personal safety to our students.

The Student Council is selling wrist bands for $1 in the Senior Covered Area at Morning Tea and Lunch this week with funds raised going towards the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

Where are you parking?

The school is concerned about a number of issues regarding parking practices around school drop off and pick-up times.

1. safety of children running across roads to cars
2. inability of residents to access and depart from their own driveways making them late for work
3. household bins unable to be emptied
4. parking on footpaths
parking in no parking areas.
parking in the bus zone

The greatest danger is to the safety of our students. There is room in Tallow Wood Drive for parking and this area is clearly marked with set down and parking areas, as are areas in Elkhorn St and Daintree Close. Please put the safety of your child/ren first and park legally.

Spirit of Kuluin Awards 2009

The Kuluin School has a proud history of publicly acknowledging and thanking those members of the school and wider community who have helped improve the educational, artistic, sporting and social outcomes for our students. Each year the Kuluin School in conjunction with the Parents and Citizens Association asks for nominations from the school community to recognise these selfless people.

The Spirit of Kuluin Award is presented at our annual “Volunteer's Lunch” and is a wonderful keepsake and recognition of those who give for the betterment of each and every child.

Please nominate those people that you have noticed giving time, effort and care within our school. They might help with classroom activities, student learning support, Sports Day, Music, Fund Raising Activities or maybe they just ‘go above and beyond’ expectations.

Nomination forms are available from the Office and by clicking here. Nominations close on Monday November 9th!

Go on! Dob in a mate and nominate!

Playgroup News 27/10/09
The Kuluin Playgroup meets every Wednesday during school term, from 9am to 11am, in the Volunteer's Room at the school. Playgroup is open to all parents and carers of children aged birth to 5 years. Our programme of free play runs in a semi structured way and the children enjoy crafts, painting, singing, stories and morning tea.

At present there is no waiting list for Playgroup so please just come along. Cost is $2 per child and you will be asked to complete an enrolment form when you first attend. Please bring your child's morning tea and drink.

I am now taking names so that we have definite numbers leading up to our Christmas activities. Every year at Playgroup we enjoy 3 or 4 weeks of special Christmas crafts and this year at our break up party we'll have the pleasure of a guest appearance by Ned Knucklehead the Clown. I will need final numbers of children participating in these activities by 28th October. As I have to order special craft supplies, please ensure that I have your name before this date. Thanks.
Hope to see you there soon.
