New Gates

Last week we advised the community about our new gates that have been installed at both our entrances from Daintree Close and Elkhorn Street at the rear of the school.  Please note that the times for the Daintree Close gate to be closed has changed due to feedback received from the community.  The Daintree Close gate will still be opened at 7.30am but will now close at 6pm.  The Elkhorn Street gate will be opened at 7.30am and closed at 4.30pm as previously advised.  We will continue to monitor the situation in the interests of our school and our community.

Smart Classrooms 2010
Smart Classrooms is the name of Education Queensland’s initiative to make Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) integral to teaching, learning and assessment practices in our classrooms. In 2010 Kuluin continues its Smart Classrooms journey developing modern, flexible learning environments for our students.

This year will see us roll out new computers, data projectors and new multimedia devices (such as iPods) providing an almost endless range of digital teaching resources. These classroom resources, in addition to our three computer labs, offer our students a tremendous opportunity to learn using ICTs.

Last year Kuluin began its participation in the Computers for Teachers project which saw all teachers receive a laptop computer to develop their ICT knowledge, skills and develop digital resources for their students. In 2010 this project continues with opportunities for teachers to develop virtual classrooms.

There are many other digital initiatives that fall under the Smart Classrooms banner. OneSchool, OnePortal and the Managed Operating Environment (MOE) are all being further enhanced this year offering parents, students and teachers even more tools to communicate, learn and assess using ICTs. For information on the Smart Classrooms Initiative please visit: http://education.qld.gov.au/smartclassrooms.

Parade Awards
Each week on each of the parades, we draw out a number of tickets from the You Can Do It box.  To get an entry into the draw, students need to exhibit Confidence, Organisation, Persistence, Resilience or Getting Along skills in class or in the playground.  Apart from the acknowledgement that goes with “being caught” doing the right thing, the students also get to choose a reward.  This may be in the form of vouchers or small gifts.

This term, I am happy to advise that the Big Blue Office in Buderim has provided us with about 30 stationery items that we will be using as lucky dip prizes, as one of the choices, to reward those children drawn out on parade.

THANK YOU BIG BLUE OFFICE for your support of our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support program.

Tuckshop 9/2
We are in need of some lovely volunteers for our very busy Tuckshop and now that we are open everyday, help would be much appreciated. We would ideally love a hand in the morning between 8:30-10am and again at 1-2pm. Not only would you be helping out the school, you can meet some new people and have good old chat in the process.

On the Uniform front, we have had a few deliveries so please pop past and check if it’s the items you’re waiting on.

Just a quick about checking the amount of change that is being put into the lunch bags and how the children are adding up their totals as we have had a few cases already of being short changed or having to change or delete items off kids orders.

Thanks very much,

Kellie and Sara

Music News 9/2

This week and next week until the 19th of February, I will be auditioning children who wish to be part of the Junior or Senior Choir.

All auditions will be during lunch time in the music room. Grade 4 and Grade 5 children are selected for the junior choir and the grade 6 and grade 7 children are selected for the senior choir. Children who wish to be part of the grade 3 choir do not need to audition.

Rock band vocal auditions are being held this Friday in the music classroom. Grade 7 children who wish to try out need to be able to sing a song, harmonize, and have a genuine commitment. It is wonderful that Mr. Steve Schultz volunteers his time and expertise to help me with the rock band.

Finally music quote for the week:
You can't possibly hear the last movement of Beethoven's Seventh and go slow.  ~Oscar Levant, explaining his way out of a speeding ticket

Smiles,

Sports News 9/2

Last week the years 4-6 had a visit from the Brisbane Lions to talk about health, the benefits of exercise, leadership and favourite foods. The four players answered many questions and kept the children involved. Fiona from AFL Queensland hosted the program and we thank her and the staff for coming and sharing information with our children. At the end of the visit Troy Selwood congratulated the children on their behaviour and stated this had been the best behaved school in Queensland. Well done to all involved. Thank you to Mr Grummitt and Mr Lindenmayer who set up screen and sound system for the visit.

The Coastal District Swimming nominations close next Tuesday and all students that nominate should have verified times from their club registrars or coaches. It is for 10-12 year olds students only. Children who compete or do squad should have a go and represent our school at a higher level. Children that are selected will receive a note outlining the details for the competition.

We have had several girls attending the Coastal District Softball trials. Good luck to all participants who have finished 3 training sessions before school with Mr Randall and Mr Doherty. Players are trying to gain selection to compete at the Regional event that will be held in March. Boys softball trials will be held on March 3 at Currimundi SS.

Swimming started this week. Thanks to all who completed the forms and money on time. We look forward to all children working on their skills and water confidence during this block of lessons.

The Importance of Good Vision

Has your child had an eye examination recently?
Did you know that 1 in 10 Australian children suffer from long-term eye disorders?

Good vision is important for your child’s educational, physical and social development.

Possible vision problems in school-aged children. The most common vision problems experienced by school-aged children are those affecting the ability to see clearly and sharply. These problems include:
- Shortsightedness (blurred distance vision)
- Longsightedness (difficulty focussing up close)
- Astigmatism (distortion of vision). Once recognised these problems are usually easy to correct. Early detection is the key!

When should my child’s eyes be tested?
Optometrists Association Australia recommends that children have a full eye examination with and optometrist before starting school and regularly as they progress though primary and secondary school.

A thorough eye examination with an optometrist takes approximately 30 minutes and attracts a Medicare rebate.

Signs that could indicate a possible vision problem:
- Frequent blinking, Red or watery eyes, Sensitivity to light, Frequently rubbing the eyes, Difficulty concentrating, Tilting head noticeably, Covering or closing one eye, - Difficulty learning to read, Holding a book very close to read, Leaving out or confusing words when reading, Squinting or sitting very close, when watching TV, - Complaints of headaches, Complaints of blurred or double vision

Remember….Vision is a precious sense.

To find the location of your nearest optometrist or for further information visit www.optometrists.asn.au (A Parent’s Guide to Good Vision - OAA)

Computer Giveaway

Unfortunately for us we have a number of computers that do not meet the current standard for our demanding network but good for you as for a home computer typing up documents, emailing and web browsing they will still be great.

This time, instead of running a tender, I wanted to allow these computers to be given away to our families as a back to school special.

All computers are essentially the same with an Intel Celeron 2Ghz processor, 512MB RAM, 40GB IDE hard drive, CD-ROM drive, 4 USB ports, integrated speaker and audio, video & LAN (network) all on the ASUS motherboard.

They have been returned to their original configuration (Windows XP SP2) and come in good working order. Each computer comes with a monitor and has an on-board network card (NIC) capable of connecting the computer to a high speed network or broadband Internet via Cat5 cable. Please be aware that we purchased these computers in 2003 and as such they do not have any warranty remaining. The school cannot service or support these computers once the giveaway has taken place.

If you would like to be in the running for one of these free computers please complete the form linked below and pop it in the box in the office before 9am on Thursday the 18th of February. A draw will be done at 10am on this day to select the lucky recipients. Those lucky people will then be contacted to arrange pickup.

Principal’s Report 2/2/2010
Congratulations to all of our students and staff for a very smooth and calm first week of the school year. At this stage our student numbers are continuing to grow which is very positive for our school community. We currently have 777 students enrolled for the 2010 school year. Finalisation of our staffing does not occur until this coming Friday which means that there could be some changes to classes if our student enrolment grows between now and Friday. Once our staffing and classes are finalised our teachers will conduct their parent information sessions.

SWPBS – School Wide Positive Behaviour Support
The Kuluin School is in the first year of School Wide Positive Behaviour Support. The School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Program applies to all members of the school community – students, staff and parents. We would appreciate parents becoming familiar with our Expectation Matrix and supporting your child/ children by discussing our school rules and expectations on a regular basis.

During the first week of school our students have been explicitly taught the three school rules: Be Safe, Be a Learner and Be Respectful. Our students have practiced routines such as lining up and moving around the school to ensure that every student and class fully understand what is expected from them. These rules and our expectations will be consolidated and revised on a daily basis until these become embedded in school practice. During Term One all of our teachers will be explicitly teaching our students our school expectations as outlined on our expectations matrix. These lessons will cover what our expectations are for the whole school, in the classroom, entering/leaving the school grounds, playing, eating areas, toilets, transitions/lining up, tuckshop/sports room and excursions/sporting events. The students will also be provided with lessons on Bullying – which will cover what bullying is?; where bullying happens?; why people bully?, bullying feelings and strategies to effectively deal with bullies. The school expectation matrix will be an insert in this week’s Newsletter for families to place on their refrigerators at home and to refer to when having discussions at home about rules/expectations.

Better Buddies Program
The Kuluin School has been successful in becoming part of the Better Buddies Program for the 2010 school year. This program is part of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation – Keeping children safe from violence and is supported by the National Australia Bank. This program provides our Year 6 students with a series of lessons to teach them how to be an effective buddy to our Prep students. The Prep students learn about what a good buddy is. Due to the fact that there has been such an overwhelming number of Year 6 and Year 5 students who are prepared to train as buddies and give up some of their break times to act as buddies to our students, I will be extending this program to our Year 5 students. I will provide more information about this program during the year.

Religious Education Teachers
At this early stage of the year we still have some classes without Religious Education teachers. If anyone would like to become involved in teaching RE at Kuluin we would be extremely pleased to hear from you.

Facilities News
During the school holidays some work occurred in the Prep playground and our SEU making this area more user friendly, aesthetically appealing and safe for our students. Two new large sandpits were created; turf was laid, landscaping and large boulders. More than $5000 was spent during the school holidays dealing with vandalism and security call outs. I would like to thank the community members who reported the smashed windows to School Watch.

Music News 2010
Welcome to Kuluin music 2010. Last year 2009 was the “”year of creativity””’. We were fortunate to have had many creative students including Brendan Coles. He wrote and performed his own guitar composition for our Kuluin’s Got Talent competition in the last week of school. This year we will continue being creative. In our classroom music, we create using our singing voices; instruments and body percussion. Maybe we will be able to create music that will inspire others.

To all the new families at Kuluin; a very special welcome. We are fortunate to have three wonderful instrumental teachers.
- Ms Lauren Kaszick-woodwind; brass and percussion (Tuesday and Thursday)
- Ms Terri Giesen-string (Wednesday)
- Mr Steve Schultz-guitar (Friday)
Mr Schultz and I will also have a grade 7 only rock band.

Kuluin has three choirs this year. A grade three choir which will rehearse during Tuesday lunch times; junior choir (grade 4-5) and senior choir (grade 6-7). These choirs will rehearse twice a week. Children have to go through an audition process to become a member of the choirs.

I also hope to start a small recorder consort. This will consist of interested children form grade 6 and 7 who wish to play in a small recorder ensemble.

If you would like to ask any questions please feel free to pop in and see me at any time.

Music quote of the week...
"I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music." ~ Billy Joel ~
