Progress on the Murri Trail |
|
|
|
|
We are at the moment, seeking quotes from sign makers for the interpretive signage required for the Murri Trail. Some time ago, the school won a grant of $7500 for the upgrade and refurbish the trail to make it more useable as a teaching resource.
The idea is to have information boards at the Infant Covered Area and at the entrance and exit of the Murri Trail, giving a historical picture of the area from the perspective of the local Indigenous people that inhabited this area, as well as identifying the significant plant species that are in the forest and how we can protect and nurture the area.
I have also recently met with a teacher from an environmental education centre and we discussed many different ways that we can incorporate the environment into units of work for the students to study. Topics ranged from technology based units involving plotting specific plant or weed species with GPS, or making a digital recording of a guided walk using iPods or MP3 players then using that as people do a self-guided walk along the trail, to sensory based units where students can make their own “bush perfume” or “feely boxes” or “colour charts” using items from the bush.
Much of the work will be centred on understanding relationships between people, cultures and the environment and how every person can “own” the Murri Trail in many differing ways. By opening up the area to our students and using it to its full potential, we have the opportunity to influence the whole community. It is a chance to heighten everyone’s thinking about respect and social responsibility.
Our main goal is to educate our kids and highlight the special things about the Murri Trail so that our environment can be enjoyed and respected by adults and students alike. We can do this TOGETHER and I look forward to everyone GROWING from the experience.
Regards,
Stephen Logan Deputy Principal

To all the wonderful, amazing teachers, staff and families at this lovely school. My children & I look forward to coming to school each and every day. It means so much to Scott and I to know that our children are getting a wonderful education and that they are safe each and every day. The kindness and support that the Kuluin community give to us is greatly appreciated. Our world is a better place with all you lovely people in it. Thank you again.

All students’ books need to be returned to the library by this Friday. Parents can help with this by asking their child if they have returned them. If they are having trouble finding them can you help your child look for them at home. If it is still a real puzzle you can let us know (especially if you have a younger child) and we can check the shelves. Our library policy is that books lost or damaged must be paid for.
As a matter of interest the students at Kuluin borrowed almost 25 000 books this year!!!! That’s a lot of reading and pleasure given – and also a lot of re-shelving!

2010 Book Lists By now you should have received 2010 book lists sent home with your child/ren late last week. Please note that after the lists were sent out we became aware that there are some small price differences for the same item across different year level lists. If you discover this, please contact Big Blue Office on 5456 1132 and Matthew will be only too happy to correct the prices for you. We apologise for this oversight.
Monthly Statement Time We have sent statements home this week, these will be the last ones for the year. Please check your child's bag for yours. Could you please organise payment of outstanding debt prior to the last day of school (11 December), we still have a large amount outstanding and we need to have all debt paid off prior to the end of the school year. Payment can be made through the office money collection slot, over the telephone by credit card or in person at the money collection window between 8.30am and 9.30am. EFTPOS is available at this time. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me on 5477 3710.

On Tuesday 17th November Maddy, Tia, Mitchell, Taliha, Lauren, Tom, James, Bonni, Lauchlan, Nick, Jade, Chloeand Abbey went to the Year 6 Aspiring Leaders Day at Mooloolaba State School. Five schools participated in the program which included Bli Bli, Glasshouse Mountains, Elimbah, Buddina and Talara.
We did activities to get to know each other and for teamwork. One of the activities was the human knot, we had to hand our other rope to another person and get out of the knot to our original position. We also got to meet other people from other schools which was really good because we got out of our comfort zone and shared our ideas without being scared. Some leadership skills we learnt were to be a role model, be respectful and be responsible. It was an excellent day and we would like to thank Mooloolaba State School for holding the event and many thanks to Mr. Grummitt and Mrs. Dyer for helping organise this event for Kuluin.

Litter Bugs Invade Our School |
|
|
|
Last Friday 6EP conducted a litter survey around our school grounds. We were astonished to discover how much litter was lying around, especially the amount of plastic straw wrappers that were polluting our schools natural environment. Too many students are not properly disposing of their rubbish. As a result 6EP have decided to educate the school community by displaying posters around the school as a reminder to carefully and thoughtfully dispose of unnecessary rubbish polluting our environment. Below is a graph of the litter we found last Friday after second lunch. Help us Keep Kuluin Clean!

A very successful Early Years Support Group Fashion Parade was held on Saturday night the 7th November at the Maroochydore Football Club. We raised in excess of $1000 which will go towards a range of resources and facilities for our school.
I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the many people who modelled, helped with the organisation, provided fashions and supplied raffle prizes for our night. Without the contribution, dedication and team work of these people, organising an event like this would just not be possible.
As always the children’s fashion parade was a real hit and a fantastic opportunity for our students to work with us and showcase their talent. Thank you to those students who modelled so confidently and proudly represented our school. Well Done! Thanks also to the parents and carers of these students for supporting our efforts. Without fashions and prizes, we would not have a parade. Thank you to Think Pink – Mooloolaba, El Mari fashion boutique – Mooloolaba, Just Jeans – Mooloolaba, Surf Planet – Buderim, Pumpkin Patch – Kawana and Intimo Lingerie for kindly supporting our parade and supplying us with clothing.
Many raffle prizes were donated by a range of companies and individuals. I would like to acknowledge the contribution of: Robyn Dell who’s painting was first prize in our raffle (Won by Noel Brady), Terry White Chemist Kawana, Buderim Coffee Company, Megan from Body Shop at Home, Fish and Crab Deep Sea Fishing Charters Mooloolaba, Pumpkin Patch, Grants Quality Meats who have relocated from the Plaza to Aerodrome Rd ($100 worth of vouchers), Debs Boutique Baskets, Boutique El’Mari - Mooloolaba, Miessence, Hair by Tash at Palmwoods, Maroochy RSL, Trazana, Melissa Jean Photography, Silver Rox Jewellery – Kawana.
Thanks also need to go to Nigel Riggs and the Maroochydore Football Club at Martins Creek as they continue to be our major sponsor, donating their club house and facilities for our use. Please help us to thank them by considering becoming a member of their club when the football season comes around again.
The biggest thank you of all goes to those people who came along and supported our parade. Without an audience to purchase tickets and come along and see what we do, the show would not go on. As always, with any events organised by the Early Years Support Group our main focus is to bring people together socially continuing to build a sense of community and further develop partnerships within the school and beyond. We have certainly achieved this goal yet again at the same time raising money, and showcasing the talents of our students (and some staff and parents). If you missed the show this year, please put it in your diary for the same time next year, and stay tuned for the next very exciting Early Years Event.
Thank you to every member of the Early Years Support Group who continue to work as a unified, harmonious team to work together to make improvements for the whole of our school. We are always keen to have new people join our group. Please look on classroom doors for information about our final meeting for the year on Nov 23rd.
Many thanks,
Leanne Harvey on behalf of the Early Years Support Group |

Congratulations to P/1DR who were the winners of the Class Activity prize valued at $200.00. They were very closely pursued by PKK, 4RW, 2HB & 4CM. It was a great effort by everyone and thank you to all who gained sponsors to raise $9,000.00 profit.
The children have received their Jelly sticks for raising over $5.00 and I will continue to hand these out to those who are a little late in returning their money as I still have some left. So if you haven’t returned your form please do so now!
The winner of the bike is Jesse from P/1DR who had 8 tickets in the draw.
Magnificent Effort Everyone! |

Congratulations to all of the Kuluin girls who have been playing rugby over the last 5 weeks . This has been a great experience and enjoyed by all. Thanks to Doug Toms from the Sunshine Coast Junior Development Officer who has run this program. Any child who would like to play club rugby in 2010 can obtain an expression of interest form from Mr Doherty.
At Ballinger Hockey Fields on Friday night several Kuluin students have participated in the Social Come Along and Try Hockey. It starts at 6:00pm and equipment is provided. Greg Richards from Queensland Hockey recommends that players wear a mouthguard. Players will be provided with a stick and shin guards and the cost is $5.00 for the night. The games conclude at 7:15pm. So Year 5-7 students who enjoyed the program at school will find it even better on the international hockey fields at Ballinger Park. Phone Greg for details on 0417 719 973
Year 6 surf skills commences this Thursday. The students had a meeting on Monday to answer all the questions. This program runs for 4 weeks and all students need to pay before boarding the bus. If parents wish to pay it off please see Mrs Kylie Randall to arrange payment plan of $8.00 per week.
