School History
The name Maroochy was inspired by swans seen at the river's mouth. This name was not given by locals. It is presumed the name was obtained from two Brisbane River Aboriginals (Yugaragul) and that they suggested the name to Andrew Petrie on an exploration trip of the coast in 1842. The local name for the swan would have been Kuluin (Kabi).
In South East Queensland there were four distinct lingual divisions or tribes. These tribes were the Kabi, Wakka, Yugarabul and Yubumbir. The territory of the Kabi practically coincided with the basins of the Mary and Burrum Rivers, as well as those of the smaller streams that drain the Blackall Range on its eastern slope. It also included Great Sandy and Bribie Islands.
The name of the tribes which were identical with the names of their individual languages were derived from the negative word of each language. Therefore, the words Kabi, Wakka, Yugar and Tugum each have the meaning of no, nothing, nowhere, etc. No definite reason has been assigned for so naming these languages.
Tribes were subdivided into locality groups with each group occupying a portion of the tribal territory which was generally recognised as its peculiar right. Each group had a distinctive name which in many cases was derived from some outstanding feature of the group's territory, either of its geography, geology, flora or fauna.
The language and customs of the locality groups were common to the whole tribe to which they belonged, although there were dialectical differences which were not so great as to cause any serious difficulty in lingual intercourse between members of different groups.
Maroochydore is from mu're-ku'tchi-dha, meaning "place of the black swan". The name of the swan is abbreviated by aboriginal usage to muru'u'tchi, hence Maroochy.
