Opti-MINDS challenge

4/09/2013

The Opti-MINDS challenge is an amazing program that provides students with the opportunity to participate in open-ended creative activities and find solutions to exciting problems.  Kuluin has been continuously involved in this program for 22 years! Opti-MINDS is not about winning.

Our three Opti-MINDS’ teams for 2013 participated in the regional challenge held at Caloundra Christian College recently. Everyone has worked incredibly hard over the last six weeks in preparation for the challenge both at school and on weekends.  Their unwavering commitment, perseverance and pursuit of excellence are noteworthy.

The members of all three Kuluin teams proved to be excellent ambassadors for our school and performed admirably.  Our Social Science team gave an insightful and humorous presentation exploring what effects on the world there would be if all telecommunication systems were lost!  Our Language Literature team presented a clever solution to their challenge, incorporating malapropisms and metaphors.  Our Science Engineering team constructed a 1.7 metre tower with a 1 kilogram pendulum suspended from its highest point and demonstrated how the pendulum could strike the side of the tower without it manoeuvring off its rickety supports.  What fun!  Our teams were acknowledged for their efforts with the following awards:

Social Science – Honours and Spirit of Opti-Minds
William R, Oliver P, Jessica G, Jamie L, Eva A , Sienna S, Naomi H.

Science Engineering – First Place and Spirit of Opti-Minds
Chelsea S, Jordan E, Clare H, Sophie K, Kayla M, Harry S, Nikita F.

Language Literature -   First Place
Ryan M, Kate W, Ben T, Kaelan S, Georgia M, Lucy H, Ayden G,

Congratulations to all the team members who participated on the day.  We would like to wish our Science Engineering and Language Literature teams all the best for the state finals held in Brisbane in October.
