The Prep class caters for a guide of 25 students who are involved in structured and play based activities designed to facilitate developing their early literacy and numeracy skills in a social and communicative environment.

When can my child enrol in Prep?

Children need to turn five by 30 June in the year they start in the Prep class.

To determine when your child can commence their Prep year, use the Prep ready reckoner calculator.

Community kindergartens and other early childhood providers offer programs for children prior to enrolment in Prep.

What can I do to help prepare my child for prep?

The most important things that you can do to help your child to be ready for Prep are:

  • Share and talk about stories to develop a genuine love of literature.

  • Talk with your children frequently about everything they do. Oral language is the foundation of all literacy. For children to start to learn to read and write they must first be able to speak and listen, sing songs and nursery rhymes.

  • Develop a sense of independence making sure that they are toilet trained and are able to dress themselves, practise opening lunch boxes and packages.

  • Develop fine motor skills by encouraging and providing craft activities, play board games and card games to develop mathematical concepts and social skills such as sharing and taking.
